Reddit Marketing: How Brands Are Leveraging It To Generate Leads and Sales

5.00/5(1)

Ever since Reddit started ranking on Google’s top search result pages for keywords, and large language models like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini citing them as sources for answers to questions users ask, savvy brands that are always looking for ways to generate more leads and sales online have turned to it.

According to an AI mode study carried out by Semrush, Reddit is the most cited domain on LLMs.

This simply means that your brands get more visibility on LLMs like ChatGPT if you are doing Reddit marketing the right way.

The number of people searching for products and services using ChatGPT is increasing daily.

And since ChatGPT cites subreddits most of the time as its source for answers to these lucrative queries, you will be leaving money on the table as a brand if you don’t find a way to get people to discuss your brand and the solutions it offers on relevant subreddits.

The AI mode on Google, which has made popular brands lose thousands of organic traffic, has even made Reddit marketing a must for a brand that still wants to generate high-quality leads and sales without running paid advertisements.

Don’t take my word for it, below are the results brands doing Reddit marketing right are getting:

6.5k views from a single post on a relevant subreddit in the first 48 hours.  The United States and Canada are the top countries by views.

The benefits are that ChatGPT is likely to cite this subreddit as a source for this answer to queries.

When users click the source, they read about your business, click a link to a blog, landing page, or even download a free lead magnet.

Apart from ChatGPT, you can also drive high-quality traffic from Google since subreddits rank well on SERPs.

For example, I searched for “ best protein powder” on Google. The subreddit where this topic is being discussed ranks in position 2:

example on reddit

Since this is a lucrative keyword, ecommerce brands that sell protein powders and have lots of Redditors discussing their product on this subreddit have positioned themselves to generate sales.

The conversion rate can even be higher when lots of comments give positive reviews about the product.

On top of that, ChatGPT will likely cite this subreddit when users on its platform search for “ best protein powder”.

Does that sound interesting?

If yes, stick around because you will learn how brands are leveraging Reddit marketing to create more awareness about their products and services on LLMs and Google, and also generate more leads and sales.

Create A Reddit Account

You need an account to start Reddit marketing for your brand. Creating a Reddit account is simple. The process is as easy as creating an account on X ( formerly Twitter), Instagram, YouTube, LinkedIn or even Facebook.

You can do it using your PC or download the mobile app on your phone and sign up with your email address or Google account.

Create a username and password, and verify your newly created account using a verification code Reddit sends to you.

Personalize your profile by selecting interests and communities that are related to your brand. This is important because Reddit will show you content related to your niche, which will help you understand the type of content that works for your competitors.

Do Your Research

Brands themselves or those that hire an agency for Reddit marketing getting the type of result. Don’t aimlessly join niche subreddits or post content. Do your research just like you would for Google or Meta ad campaigns.

Identify relevant subreddits that discuss topics related to the products and services your brand sells. The Reddit search function is there to help you find communities. Narrow down to communities with massive engagement that also align with the interest of your target customers.

This is especially true in trust-sensitive industries like money, tax, investment, where credibility is the deciding factor and you need a vibrant subreddit with massive engagement to convince your audience to take a desired action.

As Ian Gardner, Director of Sales and Business Development at Sigma Tax Pro, explains: “In tax, trust decides who wins business, and Reddit turns that trust into public proof.”

Keep an eye for top-performing content. Analyze the top-performing content in the subreddit you have chosen. Pay more attention to title, tone, terminology, post style, and level of engagement.

This will give you a clue of what works for that community, so you can reverse engineer and come up with similar content that will resonate with the audience.

Every subreddit has a rule. It’s usually listed on the sidebar. Read, understand, and adhere to it. Violating them has consequences like the moderator removing your post, or even a bot-led account suspension.

Start Creating Content

Now that you have done your research to identify relevant subreddits, understand the rules and top-performing content, it’s time to create content Redditors won’t scroll past.

Reddit content creation is different from the regular posts you make on social media platforms.

As Allen Liu, Tech Lead & Content Specialist at FreSound, explains, “The golden rule on the platform is valuable content over promotional content.”

Frequent promotional content, especially when your account is new, triggers spam, which results in the algorithm banning your account.

With a new account, focus your content on industry insights, personal experiences, thought-provoking discussions, and a how-to guide that builds trust with the algorithm and fellow active Redditors.

The goal first is to be a trusted community member, reliable industry leader, and go-to resource on topics related to your brand. Brand promotion can come later.

From my observation, text posts, images and pictures post, infographics posts, research findings, user experience sampling, and AMA (Ask Me Anything) sessions are types of valuable content that drive engagement on subreddits.

For example, Clash of Clans, a mobile video game brand, hosted an AMA season on their Reddit community where the general manager answered questions their users on Reddit asked.  That AMA content style generated 1.2k comments and 2.2k upvotes with a lot of users sharing their experiences with the mobile game brand.

As Lacey Jarvis, COO of AAA State of Play, explains: “When people share their real experiences on Reddit, that engagement is more powerful than any polished campaign.”

This type of content creates more awareness for brands, gets them cited on ChatGPT and other LLMs, and also generates leads and sales for them.

Another example is Kick Resume, an AI resume builder tool, sharing the results of the study they conducted on the USA vs Europe work culture.

This is an infographic content format that got 1.9k comments.

Their audience, who are mostly job seekers, can easily trust their tool and even pay for it to create a resume that will land them high-paying jobs. Also, with this level of engagement, LLMs are likely to cite them on topics related to work culture and resume.

Content Distribution Matters

Creating valuable content for Redditors is half the job. You need an aggressive content distribution strategy to push your brand in front of your ideal audience and for LLMs to cite you frequently.

Below is an effective strategy I’ve seen Reddit marketers with years of expertise use to help brands go viral:

Engage content organically: When other Redditors in your community or subreddit post content, engage them by commenting, upvoting, liking, and sharing it.

This helps you build credibility before the algorithm and fellow Redditors, and paves the way for you to gradually introduce your own content.

Many of the content that goes viral on different subreddits and communities come from valuable contributors who have built credibility and trust.

Build Karma: I see Karma as the currency of Reddit, and you can’t establish your account without it.

Reddit uses it to measure the trustworthiness of an account. It operates on a point system tied to consistency, upvotes, and downvotes.

Focus on building Karma by consistently creating valuable content that fellow Redditors will comment, upvote, and share.

This gives you control of your brand’s reputation, boosts your credibility on the platform and with LLMs, and increases the chances of your content going viral, which you need to generate leads and sales.

Timing Matters: When you post or engage content on Reddit matters. Study subreddits and communities you belong to understand the peak activity time. From my observation, most of the Redditors are in the United States. So posting content at midnight when they are asleep is a bad idea. It will affect the performance of such content.

Don’t Be Too Salesy: While you want to generate leads and sales, being too salesy will kill the reach of your content. It can even make moderators hide your post, remove you from the subreddit, or trigger the bots to suspend or ban your account.

“I recommend what I call the 10:2 rule, which means for every 10 content you post on Reddit, 8 should be valuable content that boosts your credibility and gains you Karma, while the remaining 2 should be promotional content,” says Suhail Patel, Director of Dustro

The interesting thing is, you can even generate leads with valuable posts that don’t sound salesy.

Once Redditors trust your brand, they can start and complete their purchase journey. No need to spend money on Reddit advertising or promoted posts.

Try Paid Ads: Once you establish your account and have added value to subreddits and communities, you can try Reddit ads to generate more leads. Although it can be expensive, it can deliver results in a short time.

Community Management and Customer Retention are Key

Once you establish your brand on subreddits and communities, you will attract customers who are ready to spend their hard earned money on your products and services.

In finance, where trust defines long-term success, Jeffrey Zhou, CEO and Founder of Fig Loans, sums it up best: “Communities create loyalty that marketing money can’t buy.”

Here’s how to go about it:

  • Participate in conversation, address the concerns of your audience, and answer questions in a friendly tone.
  • Be transparent with the products and services you sell. Don’t hide anything.
  • Encourage community building by letting your audience connect with one another, share their opinions, experiences, and wins.

Reddit Pitfalls and How to Avoid Them

I woke up one day to see that Reddit had suspended my account.

Reddit had suspended

That was my early days on the platform, trying every hack to get my post to go viral.

Every content was too promotional, never engaged with content in the community, and DM’ed Redditors my URL. That was more than enough to earn me a suspension.

That is a common pitfall on Reddit.

To be honest, Reddit marketing is hard. Brands leveraging it to generate leads and sales are strictly playing by the rules.

Below are some common pitfalls and how to avoid them:

Ignoring subreddit rules: Every subreddit you join has its own set of rules. It’s just like the rules you agree to keep when you join a Facebook group.

On subreddits, moderators enforce these rules to the letter, especially on lucrative subreddits that can generate high-quality leads. Moderators don’t waste time removing your post, and fellow Redditors can even call you out.

Being too salesy: Resist the urge to post promotional content always. Focus on posting high-quality content to build credibility and earn Karma. Chip in posts promoting your products and services, often in a way that doesn’t sound salesy.

Not being authentic: Don’t rush to engage posts just to build credibility. Read every post to understand before you comment. This makes you authentic and also a way to protect the image of your brand.

Impatience: Building a brand on Reddit is a marathon, not a sprint. Be patient, keep to the rules, while creating valuable content. The leads and sales will come.

Common Tools Brands Use for Reddit Marketing

Just like other  platforms, there are marketing tools you need to speed up the process of building a brand on Reddit:
