The award-winning documentary “Chasing BUDDHA” about Buddhist nun Robina Courtin by acclaimed Australian filmmaker Amiel Courtin-Wilson will screened for the first time in Latvia. The film will be shown on January 30th at 7 pm at the cinema "Splendid Palace" (Elizabeth Street 61, Big Hall).

You will have a great opportunity to meet a Buddhist nun Robina Courtin after film screening and ask questions about the film and her long life spiritual path more than 30 years. You will witness her inspiring energy and extraordinary personality.

Australian ex-Catholic, ex-political activist and feminist, Robina Courtin has been a Buddhist nun since 1978. Teaching Buddhism around the world, she shatters the stereotype of a Buddhist nun, her intense and direct style leaving an indelible impression on everyone she meets.

After 14 years of running, which helps thousands of prisoners throughout the USA and Australia, Robina passed on the job of executive director to a colleague in Australia in 2009. She maintains contact with many old friends in prison.

The Centre for Disease Preventionand Control (CDPC) reports: skin cancers take first place among cancers. To encourageskin examinations, a campaign was started for public involvement and attitudechange, to have them see a dermatologist and to for stricter regulation ofsolaria. Huge involvement by the public and many dermatologist visits resultedwhen mass media and opinion leaders were involved, appointments withdermatologists were available across Latvia, and toll-free phone andfree-of-charge consultations offered on the web. Changes were drafted in Cabinetof Ministers regulations with regard to hygienic and safety requirements forcosmetic tanning services and the oversight of these requirements.

Shakespeare lives in Films 2016

“Shakespeare Lives in Films” film and theatre program initiated and supported by British Council in Riga and Latvian National Library. Being part of the global programme of events and activities celebrating the work of playwright, poet and actor William Shakespeare, marking the 400th anniversary of his death in 2016. The film programme is designed to reveal how British cinema has transformed and reimagined Shakespeare`s work, to increase interest in British literature and English language learning as well.

As a part of the festival in Riga in honour of the 400th anniversary of the death of William Shakespeare a legendary British actor, director and teacherRobert Taylor Tayman held a series of master-classes for actors, dancers and singers. Master-classes were held as part of the Shakespeare Lives Festival in partnership with CREA Promotion, Riga’s Maly Theatre, supported by tourism agency Express Tours, the British Council and the British Embassy in Riga.

Robert Taylor Tayman teaches a special performance technique of the Shakespearean theatre. This newly discovered ancient technique is being explored today in the light of the systems of Konstantin Stanislavsky and George Gurdjieff.

During film festival three classical film adaptations of  Shakespeare’s plays have been already presented: film “Hamlet” 1948 by Sir Laurence Olivier,  the legendary film of Peter Brook’s “King Lear” 1970, the famous film by Basiel Dearden “All Night Long” 1951 was held in Liepaja this summer, famous British director and theatre master Robert Taylor Taylor presented his international theatre project IKIRU in Riga. 

This project was ordered by British Council in Riga, Latvia in 2016.
